Ballroom class raising money for costumes

Students file into the Mountain Vista Elementary School cafeteria, but not for lunch. They’re here to cha-cha.

The class is turning their sneakers into dance shoes, preparing to compete against other schools. One of the students, Carlos, is an award-winning dancer, after just two years in the class. He also plays baseball but makes time for dance twice a week. He and his partner, Vetta, are excited to face off against other students in Coachella Valley Unified School District.

They are under the instruction of Billy Franco. His classes are free to the students, but competition costumes can cost Franco up to $1,000 out of pocket. Now he’s looking for the community’s help to foot the bill.

“It’s something that I like to give back to the kids for all the hard work they put into it,” said Franco.

The ballroom students at Mountain Vista Elementary School have their competition coming up on Saturday, March 23rd at 9am at Desert Mirage High School in Thermal.
