BNP traffic causes headache for local residents
The BNP Paribas Open is in full swing — fans from all over are filling the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. But the event caused major traffic issues Saturday on surrounding streets.
Some local residents posted photos and commented on Facebook, claiming the backup was so bad they could not access their homes at one point. “It was so backed up with traffic that we couldn’t get into the main street so we had to backtrack all the way around and even when we got onto our street, we couldn’t get home,” said Gillian Jones, a resident of La Quinta Del Oro.
Jones says she and her neighbors were frustrated that this could happen so close to this year’s Ironman triathlon traffic incident.
However, she also says that she was impressed that the city responded swiftly to their concerns: “I put a comment out there on Facebook and right away Linda Evans said okay I’m taking care of it we’re going to send some help out there for the city of Indian Wells,” said Jones.
If you’re visiting the tournament, be sure to take note of these signs. Cars are being issued citations to those parked illegally in residential areas.
“We’re monitoring the situation. We’re aware of it, we’ve got a lot of help out there to make sure people can navigate wherever they’re coming from,” said Philippe Dore, Media Marketing Director, BNP Paribas Open.
Dore tells us tournament-goers can view a map and list of all appropriate parking areas online as well as on their interactive app. “Our mobile app is like your companion to your visit here you can get the practice schedule, there’s even live streaming, the dining options,” said Dore.
