Highway 111 westbound is partially closed in Indian Wells due to an accident near the intersection of Highway 111 and Cook Street.

A bicyclist crashed into a parked minivan around 10:54 a.m. The bicyclist was taken to an area hospital. The driver of the vehicle stayed on scene and cooperated with responding emergency crews, according to Deputy Mike Vasquez, public information officer for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The bicyclist sustained major injuries in the accident.

Drugs or alcohol do not appear to have played a role in the collision. The roadway is expected to stay closed for several hours.

The closure initially extended from Province Way to Cook Street and was forced to expand to Eldorado Drive due to congestion clogging the side streets due to traffic overflow.

Highway 111 westbound is closed from Eldorado Drive to Cook Street. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is on scene investigating.
