70-year-old Cathedral City man dies while in custody at Indio jail

A 70-year-old man from Cathedral City died while in custody at the Indio jail overnight Monday.

Steven Crawford was found unresponsive in his cell at the John Benoit Detention Center at around 12:36 a.m., the Riverside County Sheriff's Dept. announced.

The agency said custody staff and jail medical personnel immediately administered life-saving measures. Paramedics responded and assumed life-saving measures. However, Crawford was ultimately pronounced dead.

Investigators from the Corrections Central Investigations Bureau responded and assumed the investigation. There are no signs of foul play, and the investigation is ongoing.

According to county jail records, Crawford had been in custody since Saturday on a battery charge. He was in custody on $5,000 bail.
