Indio to build bridge over Avenue 44 after nearly a decade of storm-related closures
The city of Indio secured funding to build a bridge on Avenue 44, which had closed several times over the past years due to storm damage.
City officials announced that the project will cost $30 million, which will come from a combination of federal and city funds and support from the Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG).
"Constructing an all-weather bridge, as opposed to simply replacing the road, not only addresses the pressing need but also lays the foundation for a lasting solution that will benefit generations to come," reads a notice by city officials.
Construction on the bridge is expected to start in Spring 2024.
Avenue 44 has been shut down between Golf Center Parkway and Apache Street since August due to damage caused by Tropical Storm Hilary.
According to the city, Avenue 44 has washed out due to strong storms four times in the last six years, 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2023. The 2019 closure lasted for seven months.
"Over the last decade, City Council and staff have actively sought funding to secure a permanent solution, and we take pride in presenting this transformative solution that will positively impact our community," reads the city's announcement.
Coming up tonight at 10 and 11 p.m., News Channel 3's Jennifer Franco will have more on the plan to construct the bridge, speaking with local leaders.
