Palm Springs City Council to review police camera program, real time intelligence center

KESQ

PALM SPRINGS, CALIF. (KESQ) - The Palm Springs City Council will review an update on the Palm Springs Police Department’s Public Safety Camera Program and Real Time Intelligence Center during its October 14 meeting, as questions continue about surveillance technology, public safety and privacy protections.

The city’s system includes automated license plate readers and intersection cameras designed to help officers investigate crimes, identify vehicles connected to criminal activity and improve response times. The Real Time Intelligence Center brings camera information together to help officers assess incidents and coordinate their response.

The update follows community questions about how the technology is used, who can access the information and what safeguards are in place to protect residents’ privacy. The discussion is expected to provide greater insight into the program’s operations, effectiveness and oversight.

We will have continuing coverage from the meeting tonight at 4:30pm, 5pm, 6pm and 10/11pm on News Channel 3.
