Sunnylands Center & Gardens will remain open to the public five days a week until closing for its annual summer hiatus at the end of the day Sunday, June 4.

Previously, the Center & Gardens was to close for seven days in May to accommodate an upcoming retreat on security issues in the Indo-Pacific region. The retreat will still take place on the Sunnylands estate, but the use of the Center is no longer required. Tours of the historic Annenberg home, however, will not be available May 13-19.

Sunnylands will also resume its semiannual series of outdoor movie nights, Films in the Gardens, in May with a selection of three culinary-themed movies celebrating the 2022-2023 exhibition, A Place at the Table: Dining at Sunnylands.

Screened on three consecutive Fridays in May, the movies are:

  • May 5 at 8 pm—Big Night (1996)—New Jersey, 1950s. Two brothers run an Italian restaurant. Business is not going well as a rival Italian restaurant is out-competing them. In a final effort to save the restaurant, the brothers plan an evening of incredible food. (IMDb).
Rated: R. Run time: 1 hour 49 minutes.
  • May 12 at 8 pm—The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014)—The Kadam family leaves India for France where they open an Indian restaurant directly across the road from Madame Mallory's (Helen Mirren) Michelin-starred eatery, sparking an intense rivalry. (IMDb).

Rated: PG. Run time: 2 hours 2 minutes.

  • May 19 at 8 pm—East Side Sushi (2014)—An immigrant single mother frustrated with her employment options decides to take a chance working at a Japanese restaurant and realizes her dream to become a sushi chef to provide a better future to her family. (IMDb).
Rated: PG. Run time: 1 hour 46 minutes.

All films begin at 8:00 p.m., with Sunnylands’ gates opening at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

While reservations are not required, carpooling is strongly encouraged. No food or seating is provided. Filmgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and small picnics. Large coolers, alcohol, smoking, and pets are not permitted.

Films may be canceled at any time due to weather conditions, including rain, lightning, or strong winds.

Films in the Gardens is presented in partnership with the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Sunnylands Center & Gardens is located at 37977 Bob Hope Drive in Rancho Mirage.

Sunnylands’ regular operating hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. After closing for the summer on June 4, Sunnylands will reopen for a new season on Wednesday, Sept. 13.
