From cop to mentor: Veteran officer nurtures students at Palm Springs High

A fresh face has joined the ranks at Palm Springs High School this school year, bringing nearly two decades of law enforcement experience to her role as a mentor and supporter for students. School Resource Officer Paola Ramos is on a mission to break down barriers between law enforcement and education.

Last month, Officer Ramos took on what she called her most enjoyable assignment yet at school. "Part of my role is to also be part mentor, part educator, and really provide support for the students and families as they transition into adulthood," Ramos said.

Officer Ramos's mission goes beyond traditional law enforcement duties. Instead of simply enforcing discipline, she intervenes through mentorship and mediation when conflicts arise. "Sometimes we have fights, and trying to mediate those quarrels between the kids helps them a lot," Ramos said. "Sometimes giving them perspective really helps the kids understand more of their own behavior and why they're doing what they're doing."

She said she encourages students to ask her anything, creating an open and trusting environment.

"I like seeing the kids, I like working with them. I like seeing how they progress in time. And really being able to be a resource to them is something that I enjoy," Ramos said.

Ultimately, her goal is to guide students in making informed decisions and doing the right thing, leaving them with valuable life lessons.

Assigned to Palm Springs High School for the next four years, Officer Ramos hopes to make a significant impact on the students and the school community.
