Insider Blog: When can we expect to see snow at the Tramway?

Snow here on the valley floor is a pretty rare sight. Thankfully, we have a bunch of towering mountains in our backyard. Based on the average of the last 10 years, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway sees its first inch (or more) of snow on November 23rd.

The reason our mountains see more snow than the valley floor has to do with the altitude of the mountains and thermodynamics. As moist air from the ocean flows east, it is forced up the mountains. The cooler temperatures of higher altitudes cause the moisture to condense out of the air, freeze, and fall as snow.

While it remains a mystery when we will see at least an inch of snow at the Tramway, we can all look forward to a return of our snowcapped mountains soon enough.
