Improvements in drought conditions followed by excessive heat

As of this morning, California is experiencing the best drought conditions in over three and a half years! The Drought Severity and Coverage Index measures drought conditions on a scale from 0 to 500. Right now, our DSCI is 8! This means drought is virtually non-existent in California! This is the best DSCI score since January 21, 2020.

A large area of the desert Southwest will see building heat potential in the coming days, with temperatures well above 100° in much of southwestern Arizona and southeastern California.

An Excessive Heat Watch has been issued for the Coachella Valley, along with much of Southeastern California, for Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures will climb between 110-115°. School may be back in session, but these temperatures aren't messing around. Always practice heat safety.

The next seven days will continue to be warm. It is still August in the desert, after all. Temperatures will likely reach, if not exceed, 110° by Saturday, with excessively hot temperatures on Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures will begin to drop a little bit by the middle of next week.
