First Alert Weather Alert: Strong winds and thunderstorms impact the region

The First Alert Weather Team has been tracking passing showers, scattered thunderstorms, and heavy mountain snow surrounding the region. Locally, strong winds remain the primary impact for most valley cities. A First Alert Weather Alert remains through Sunday night as gusty, potentially damaging winds continue.

Here are some of the strongest winds we've seen in our area:

  • Whitewater - 63 mph
  • Palm Springs - 55 mph
  • Palm Desert - 51 mph
  • Thermal - 49 mph
  • Cathedral City - 46 mph

A Wind Advisory will remain in place for the Coachella Valley through Sunday night. Gusty west winds capable of blowing down tree limbs and creating difficult travel conditions are expected to continue through Sunday evening. South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued a Windblown Dust Advisory as PM10 levels can vary hour-by-hour, reducing air quality to unhealthy levels.

Winds will reach their peak midday before they gradually start to weaken Sunday night. Secure items outdoors, like patio umbrellas, to prevent property damage in the meantime.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for San Bernardino and Riverside County mountains through Sunday night for elevations above 5,000'. Plan your commute accordingly, as travel could be difficult to impossible.

Temperatures have dipped into the 60s today but warmer temperatures are on the way next week. The First Alert Weather Team is tracking another round of rain that may arrive next weekend.
