Man in custody after standoff with police in Cathedral City

A man is in custody after a standoff with police at a home in Cathedral City on Wednesday.

Police barricaded a home on Bella Vista Road on 68200 block of Bella Vista Road near Avenida La Paz and Calada Road. One witness, Steve Duvall, who was doing a roofing job across the street, tells us there was an altercation between two men around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Police arrived to the scene at 7 a.m. and one of the men, 41-year-old Sandy Kittisit, went inside the home while more officers and members of SWAT arrived.

Officers say Kittisit walked out with a baseball bat or a pipe and yelled at officers to shoot him. Police say he moved towards officers swinging the bat and that is when he was shot with beanbags. Sandy went back inside the home.

Authorities were able to arrest Kittisit shortly before 11:15 a.m. after he exited the house and surrendered. Once officers entered the home they not only determined Sandy had barricaded the doors with large objects but also attempted to start a fire inside of the home.

Kittisit was arrested for 2 counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Resisting Arrest and was transported to Riverside County Jail in Banning where he was booked.
