The city of Calexico is holding a special meeting just hours after declaring a local emergency due to the influx of immigrants.
Calexico is located about two hours south of the Coachella Valley. It is the border town to Mexicali.
The Calexico City Council is expected to declare a local emergency regarding the influx of migrants coming from the border and the impact of Title 42 on its community, according to our sister station KYMA
Local shelters in Calexico say they are now above capacity, KYMA reports.
City officials said they are not prepared for this crisis. Vice Mayor Raúl Ureña says the city can't handle this as it already has its own problems.
“The city of Calexico has the number two high risk city in the state of California is not prepared in the slightest for this crisis," said Ureña. "We are working very closely with the County of Imperial and obviously still responding our very limited services here in the city of Calexico.”
Migrants are released anytime, anywhere, officials tell KYMA. It has made it difficult to track of the number of migrants entering the community.
This week, at least an additional 19 migrants were left on the street next to a local park.
