Fire in hills just north of Indio 75% contained, no threat to communities

Update: Monday 12:21 p.m.

The fire had burned 30-40 acres as of Monday afternoon. According to Cal Fire, firefighters planned to remain on scene to monitor the fire area which was 75% contained. There was no immediate threat to any nearby homes in the Talavera neighborhood and there were no injuries reported.

Update 10:31 p.m.

Firefighters will remain on the scene throughout the night and into the morning to monitor the blaze. Authorities tell us that even though the fire is highly visible, there is no threat to the surrounding community. There have been no evacuations and no injuries.

Update at 8:00 p.m.

Cal Fire said 30-40 acres of palm trees were burning in an area difficult to access. The fire was located near Washington Street and Coyote Song Way. There were no injuries or evacuations.

Crews worked to gain access to a fire burning in the hills in the Indio area Sunday night. Initially, Cal Fire confirmed crews were called out to Washington near Coyote Song before 5:30 p.m.

Cal Fire said crews had limited access and were trying to make a way closer to the blaze.

As of 7:00 p.m., Cal Fire confirmed it did not have a total acreage but said the area was mostly desert landscape. It also mentioned a palm tree oasis was nearby that was about 7-10 acres total.
