School district sends ‘Talking to Children About Violence’ release after Florida shooting
This morning, Sandra Lyon Ed. D., the Superintendent of the Palm Springs Unified School District (PSUSD), has released a statement with attached resources to help address district-wide concerns following the Parkland, Florida high school shooting that left 17 dead on Feb. 14. The statement was also signed by the PSUSD Board of Education President James Williamson.
“We are all reeling from the news of yet another tragic school shooting yesterday in Florida,”
the statement reads. “We know that you may have students and/or colleagues that have questions or are dealing with emotional stress at this time.”
Attached with the statement were three documents, “Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers” (in English and in Spanish), and “School Safety and Crisis -Addressing Grief: Tips for Teachers and Administrators,” all from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). Lyon then went on to point to the in-school resources made available within PSUSD:
“As a reminder, our crisis response team members are always available to provide support for students and staff members trying to process this (or other similar tragedies),” the statement reads. “Our Mental Health Department also has clinicians on hand to assist staff members who need support.”
The statement began to close with a note that grounded school shootings as something possible anywhere; an advisory for teachers to be up to date on their training.
“Please know that we are working diligently to get staff members trained in the H.E.R.O. (Hide! Escape! Run! Overcome!) program, so they can provide our students with the tools and resources they need for threat response…” the statement reads. “Please take good care of yourselves too, and remember that there is support available if and when you need it.”
