Shots fired in Cathedral City leads to precautionary school lockdown

School lockdowns at Nellie N. Coffman Middle School and Cathedral City Elementary School in Cathedral City have been lifted. The lockdown at N. Coffman Middle School, which, according to an email sent out to parents, lasted from approximately 1:35 p.m. to 2:05 p.m., was done as a precautionary measure due to reports of shots fired in the general vicinity of the school.

Cathedral City police confirmed that there was a shooting at the 35-300 Blk Corregidor Dr. just before 1:20 pm.

According to a news release by CCPD, a physical altercation between two males led to one of the combatants firing a weapon several times at the other combatants as they fled from the area.

The shooting suspect also fled from the scene and has been identified as a juvenile, however, they and handgun used have not been located at this time. CCPD is still investigating the incident.

Joan Boiko from the Palm Springs Unified School District estimated that the lockdowns lasted for about 20 minutes. According to the email sent to parents, Nellie M. Coffman “initiated voluntary procedures under an abundance of caution and for the safety of our students.”

Witnesses or anyone with any information is encouraged to call the Cathedral City Police Department at (760) 770-0300.
