Butterfly Garden opens in Palm Springs
Many famililes attended a Butterfly Block Party in Palm Springs on Sunday afternoon.
The celebration, hosted by the Desert Water Agency, introduced a new art installation and garden home to a bevy of water-friendly plants that will benefit pollinators — like birds, bees and butterflies.
The project was completed in partnership with students at Palm Springs High School. The art club painted the mural behind the garden and the garden club, which has been tracking the migration of monarch butterflies, helped with the planting.
“Part of our resolution was to track that migration and also install more milkweeds here locally, and that way we could help the monarchs become attracted to our beautiful desert and, yeah, help them reproduce,” said president of the garden club, Christian Flores.
The family-friendly event included live music, crafts, face-painting, seed planting and even a butterfly on stilts. The event also included information on how Coachella Valley residents can create a similar garden of their own.
The garden is located at the DWA operations center at 1200 Gene Autry Trail in Palm Springs. The public is invited to check it out.
