Palm Springs supports state in sanctuary state policies
The Palm Springs city council voted unanimously Wednesday night to support the state’s legal fight against the federal government on it’s sanctuary state policies. The focus of the lawsuit is on Senate Bill 54.
The city council voted to have the ciy file an amicus brief in support of the sanctuary state policies, which places sharp limits on how state and local law enforcement agencies can cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
It means the city will help provide additional arguments for the state in its legal fight. Councilman Geoff Kors said Pam Springs is now the first city in Riverside or San Bernardino County to take such a stance.
The decision comes after President Trump held a roundtable discussion regarding the policy, with leaders from several cities and counties that opposed the sanctuary state policy.
No other desert city has weighed in legally regarding the state’s policy so far.
Other cities that have sided with the federal government against the state include Beaumont, Huntington Beach, Hesperia, Mission Viejo, Escondido, San Diego and Orange Counties, Los Alamitos, Fountain Valley, San Juan Capistrano, Aliso Viejo, the City of Orange, Westminster, and Santa Clarita.
