Student Athlete of the Week – Travis Adams
Some athletes may start a step behind. Starting small but Travis Adams always thinking big. He wasn’t looking back, keeping right on track.
“First started out he was 5’8-5’6, a little guy. Kept battling and working hard and he’s going to be a division one player next year,” Darol Salazar said.
“I have always wanted to go to division one when I was little. Every kids dream to play top notch college baseball and I felt like I was really maturing after my sophomore year and I felt like I could get a division one scholarship,” Travis Adams said.
Last year in his junior year the dream did happen. Sacramento State offering the Aztec right hander a scholarship.
“My mom was crying, she was with me when they called me and offered me. My dad was excited for me, so was my grandma and my whole family,” Adams said.
The same season his team went all the way to the CIF Championship in Dodger Stadium and although Adams was part of the success he often took a back seat role to the soon to be Chicago Cubs’ draft pick Jeremiah Estrada. Senior year though was his year.
“He had to and he did it. Stepped up and did it for us. Like I said always been a competitor out there. He is one of those guys that doesn’t wear his emotion on his sleeve. He battles, you can’t tell if someone just hit a home run or he just struck out someone. Stays on an even keel like you want your good players to do,”Salazar said.
A 1.11 ERA and 11-wins that included a 15-strike out no hitter back in April.
“I felt a little pressure to fill the role. Throughout the year it got lighter and lighter. Felt less pressure. Feel like I filled that role pretty good this year, stepped up and did my job,” Adams said.
Although his only loss may have been the end, number 25 is going to live on with the next group of talented Aztec baseball players.
“My friends. Great teammates. Couldn’t ask for better ones and I have a message for the young ones just keeping competing, fight on and do your best you never know who is out there,” Adams said.
