Banning Unified School District teacher strike ends
Banning Unified School District teachers end their three-day strike after reaching an agreement with the district.
Teachers protested for three days last week following extensive disagreements over compensation and student resources, punctuated by a one-hour extension of instruction time at Nicolet Middle School that teachers say was not negotiated with the district.
Since last school year, the district required teachers to be in the classroom an extra 52 minutes to meet state instruction time requirements but with no compensation for that time.
District officials said instructional time was increased because Nicolet students were receiving an hour less instruction time than Banning High School students.
According to Ed Sibby of the California Teachers’ Association, the teachers and the district negotiated the extra 52 minutes down to 20 minutes, which the teachers will not be getting compensated for.
Sibby also confirmed that the district agreed to pay $300,000 in back pay for extra hours. The teachers originally asked for $500,000 during last week’s negotiations. The district also guaranteed that there will be no retaliation against teachers that went on strike or scabs.
The unfair labor practice suit that was scheduled to go to court on August 28 has also been dropped.
Classes returned to normal Monday morning.
