Tow truck drivers turn out for funeral procession

Area tow truck drivers paid their respects to a colleague who was killed in Cabazon earlier this month.

Jon Israel, 31, was killed on Aug. 7 after being hit by a big rig that had veered onto the shoulder of Interstate 10 near Haughen Lehmann Way. Officials said his tow truck was experiencing mechanical issues when he exited the vehicle to inspect it.

The funeral procession through Banning on Saturday was not only to honor him, but served as a reminder to drivers to slow down or move over. Isreal had been an advocate for the “Move Over” law and had been petitioning for stricter enforcement at the time of his death.

A spirit ride in Israel’s honor is planned for Aug. 28.
