Multiple reports of mail theft in Indio neighborhood
Some Indio residents are frustrated and speaking out — expressing concern over a series of mail theft incidents in their neighborhood.
On Sunday, Indio police were called to the neighborhood after residents found a pile of what appeared to be stolen mail in bushes at the end of their street. They say they believe someone has been going through mailboxes in the neighborhood in search of holiday gift cards and cash, and then tossing the unwanted mail into bushes in the neighborhood. The street is Pecos Place.
Indio police reportedly came by the neighborhood Sunday night to collect the tossed mail. Neighbors are urging others in the area to collect their mail as soon as it is delivered or to consider using a p.o. box
“My mail had been broken into two times over the last week…and it’s just been concerning me,” said Ted Lozano, a homeowner on Pecos Place.
“It’s actually been ongoing for a while we’ve had quite a few break-ins in our mail boxes. We’ve called the police we’ve advised all of our neighbors that if there’s something like that, to call the police. Of course, follow all the protocols….call your credit card companies, your banks, etc.,” said Jeffrey Bayer, another resident of Pecos Place.
The Indio Police Department offers tips to avoid mail theft, including reporting suspicious individuals and vehicles seen driving around neighborhoods and near neighborhood mailboxes. They recommend using the letter slots inside your local post office for your outgoing mail, or handing it to a letter carrier. Additionally, residents should pick up mail promptly after delivery. And finally, always report any theft of mail to your local police department.
