Dezart Performs hosts special screening of The Lavender Scare

Award-winning theater company Dezart Performs is hosting a screening of the documentary The Lavender Scare at Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs on Tuesday.

The film is narrated by Glenn Close and directed and produced by Josh Howard. It documents the stories of those who were victims of the anti-gay purges of the 1950’s, when homosexuals were deemd “security risks” to the country.

This screening comes immediately following Dezart Performs production “Perfect Arrangement,” which also focuses on the challenges of this era for the LGBTQ community.

Dezart Performs Artistic Director, Michael Shaw, said it’s important for today’s audiences to understand this history, so not to repeat it.

“We’re seeing evidence of a repeat of this in our administration now where there is a group of people being targeted and you ostracize them by saying how horrible they are and the fear that those people can invade us, and that’s what the federal government did during the Lavender Scare and the Red Scare,” said Shaw.

Proceeds will benefit the LGBTQ Center of the Desert and Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs LGBTQ Film Festival.
