Opioid epidemic panel and Narcan demo to be held Saturday
According to the National Institute for Drug Abuse, every day, over 115 Americans die after overdosing on opioids.
It’s known as the entirely preventable epidemic, but not all abusers look like addicts in dark alleyways.
“I’ve seen so many people that you would never imagine that that person has an issue,” said Jessica Sanchez, a licensed therapist & clinical director at Refinery Integrated Wellness.
A panel of local opioid experts, offering a solution and resources, will be hosting a free informational event this upcoming saturday for anyone in need…
The “Opiate Epidemic Presentation and Narcan Demo” will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2019, from 9am-noon. A complimentary breakfast will be served at 9am, followed by a panel of experts who plan to discuss the opioid crisis here in the Coachella Valley, how to identify addiction, and the best ways for people to get help.
“Our meeting this weekend is a free community event to discuss the opiate crisis and what people can do about it,” said Dr. David Duffner, MD. Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon.
Duffner said he’ll be discussing how a simple nasal spray, Narcan, can save someone from overdosing.
“If you’re at all connected with someone who has an opiate problem this meeting could save their life,” Duffner said.
Panelists and presenters include:
David Duffner, Orthopedic Medicine Jim A. Powell, M.A. MFT Counselor Sgt. G. Fernandez, Palm Springs Police Department F. Huntington, American Medical Response EMT Celebrate Recovery Resource Leaders
“We definitely want to be part of the conversation that is taking place to try and solve this problem,” said Sgt. Mike Casavan of the Palm Springs Police Dept.
Organizers say they hope people will participate in the Q & A session to learn about opioid use here in the valley, how to identify addiction, and the best ways for people to get help.
“Maybe a parent sees some signs with their child and may be too afraid to ask, but in a situation like this, where the community comes together maybe it’s a little bit more inviting for people to talk and let their guards down and start asking those questions that could potentially save a life,” Casavan said.
The event will be held at Our Savior’s Palm Springs: 1020 E. Ramon Rd. Palm Springs, CA. (760)-327-5611 ext. 103 pat@oursaviors.org
