Sunday Night Murder Launches Search For Gunman

Police are looking for a man who they say killed his ex-wife, and tried to kill her 18-year-old son Sunday night.

It happened on the 67-300 block of Peineta in the Rio Vista area of Cathedral City at 10:45pm.

Cathedral City police tell News Channel 3 Salvador Bustillos Contreras got into the house, killed Rebecca Zabala. He then tried to kill her son, who struggled with the man, and managed to get away along with several other family members who were there at the time.

Contreras ran off, prompting a massive search. Officers from Cathedral City, Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs, Riverside Sheriff’s and the US Border Patrol set up a perimeter looking him, with no luck.

Officers fear he could be making his way to Mexico, where he has family.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspect is asked to call the Cathedral City Police Department at 760-770-0303 or call Valley Crime Stoppers at 760-341-STOP (7867).
