Tax Preps: Things To Look Out For When Filing
It’s tax time.
And, with just days to go until April 15th, theres a good chance you’re procrastinating if you owe the IRS money.
Every year, about 75% to 80% of taxpayers get a refund.
But most of those who wait until the final hours have a bill to settle with Uncle Sam.
This year the average refund is up over $3,000.
If you want to get that money in your pocket right away, the fastest way to do that is to file online and do direct deposit.
“So you do an electronic return, software holds your hand, you can’t believe how easy it is.” according to Raphael Tulino from the IRS. “You hit enter, paperless return, you get your money in 7 to 10 days and you’re done with it.”
Compare that to several weeks for a paper check return.
With 3 out of 4 taxpayers receiving some sort of refund, scammers are trying to cash in.
It’s important to remember the IRS will never contact you through email.
“We don’t initiate contact with taxpayers thru email about a refund, a probe, a survey or anything like that,” says Tulino. “If that’s coming, it’s a scam. In fact if you see an email from the IRS in your inbox, think scam. Because that’s what it is.”
The best defense is just to delete it.
Definitely don’t click on any links or offer personal information.
