Riverside County Sheriff Gives $5 Million Back To County

News Channel 3 has learned that the Riverside County Sheriff has found ways to trim its budget further than originally thought, and will give back $5 million to the county.

In a letter submitted to the board of supervisors, this morning, Sheriff Stanley Sniff, Jr., says he and his staff were able to re-balance the budget through early retirements, a federal stimulus COPS grant, attrition, maintaining vacancies at management levels, rigid oversight of overtime, and other cost-cutting moves.

In the past week, the sheriff says, they were able to make final decisions on where the department could postpone purchases and make additional cuts.

In the end, the department found itself able to return $5 million to the county, which is struggling to with a budget deficit, and making tough decisions on layoffs and program cuts.
