Report Shows Diabetes Cases Are Growing
With this being national diabetes prevention month, a new report shows that more than 50 percent of all Americans will have diabetes or prediabetes by the year 2020.
The analysis for the report was conducted by the United Health Group’s Center for Health Reform and Modernization.
It confirms that diabetes is one of the fastest growing diseases in the country. If the trend continues, the report says in ten years 10 percent of total health care costs will be associated with diabetes with it reaching an annual cost of $500 billion.
“It’s staggering, but this is the truth,” said Dr. Tahany Habashy who practices family medicine at Eisenhower Medical Center. “Actually diabetes I don’t think there is any house that is not having one member or a relative or a cousin or somebody they know that does not have diabetes.”
Right now its estimated 26 million Americans have diabetes with 67 million people walking around with prediabetes.
The disease can be triggered by lifestyle choices. Doctors recommend that people eat healthy and exercise on a regular basis.
