I-10 Collision May Be Result Of DUI
The driver of a Porsche that was traveling 100 mph- plus when it struck a big rig from behind on Interstate 10 may have been under the influence of alcohol, the California Highway Patrol reported today.
The crash occurred about 7:10 p.m. Monday, west of Cook Street.
According to the CHP, the 46-year-old Rancho Mirage man at the wheel of the 2007 Porsche Carrera entered westbound traffic from the Cook Street on-ramp at high speed.
The car collided with a westbound tractor-trailer going about 55 mph in the No. 3 lane. After striking the big rig, the Porsche spun out and caught fire.
The Goodyear, Ariz., resident behind the wheel of the White Freightliner and two witnesses were able to get the occupants of the Porsche out before it was engulfed in flames, according to the CHP.
Both occupants of the Porsche, whose names were not immediately released, were taken to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment of what were described as major injuries. The driver of the big rig suffered minor injuries, according to the CHP.
Although the collision remains under investigation, the CHP said the officer at the scene believes the driver of the Porsche was under the influence of alcohol.
