Highway 86 Reopens After Big Rig Spills 80,000 Pounds Of Food
California Highway Patrol officers re-opened a stretch of Highway 86 in Indio on Monday morning that had been shut down after a big rig rolled over, spilling its contents.
The accident happened at 4:46 a.m. near the intersection of Avenue 50.
The CHP’s website said two big rigs collided, sending one affiliated with Food For Less grocery stores onto its side, spilling its 80,000 pounds of food.
One driver was transported for major injuries.
The highway had to be shutdown not only for removal of the wreckage and food, but also for an oil spill that came from the accident.
Traffic was re-routed onto Avenue 50 for the five hours the highway was closed.
The highway was re-opened at 9:42 a.m., according to the CHP.
