Elementary Students Collect Spare Change For Japan

Fifth-grade students at Washington Charter School are learning a little spare change can make a big difference.

They’re collecting money this week to help children in Japan devastated by the earthquake and tsunami.

“Kids our age have nothing right now,” said student Tazz Armstrong Ross. “They have no toys, books, homes and shelter.”

Armstrong Ross came up with the fundraising idea. At first, he planned to collect donations in his neighborhood. But then, he decided to dream big.

“When Tazzy initiated and said, ‘Mrs. Rose, let’s do this,” said teacher Luann Rose. “then we decided we better do it. “

Armstrong Ross even designed a t-shirt that depicted the students’ motto: “Send change. Send hope. Send love.

The money will go to an actual non-profit group known as Save the Children. The students found it online.

Their goal is to raise at least $1500. So far, they’ve collected over $300.

But, with just a few days left, the students are hoping for a miracle and asking for the public’s help to reach their goal.

The students will be collecting the donations before and after school between 7:50 a.m.-8:20 a.m. and between 2:40 p.m.-3:20 p.m.

Washington Charter School is located at 45-768 Portola Ave. in Palm Desert.

Designated students will be standing at both school entrances along Chicory St. and Lantana Ave. with money jars.
