Cathedral City’s 24 Hour Fitness Admits It Will Close Its Doors
Management for the 24 Hour Fitness location in Cathedral City confirmed a News Channel 3 report we first brought you on Monday: the location on Date Palm Drive will close its doors for good.
In a statement released to all media on Wednesday, 24 Hour Fitness management said:
“24 Hour Fitness has notified members of its Cathedral City, Calif. club that the facility will be closing effective June 30, 2011, as a result of an expired lease. We remain committed to meeting our members’ fitness needs and have granted all members of the Cathedral City Active club access to the 20,000 square-foot Indio Jackson Street Sport club at no additional charge. The Indio club features additional amenities, including a full-sized basketball court, indoor lap pool, sauna and steam room. Furthermore, all team members of the Cathedral City facility have been offered the opportunity to work at the Indio location or other 24 Hour Fitness clubs in the surrounding area. If members have any questions about their membership, we encourage them to speak with a team member or call our Member Services Department at (800) 432-6348.”
The gym has been in its current location for more than 20 years, with more than 4,000 members on its roster. The news came as a shock to many of them.
“It’s part of the community, we help out Cathedral City high school,” said Joshua McMeans, a personal trainer at the location. “I had a client this morning who’s been a member for 20 years, since 1991, and I told her about it. She has the right to know, she deserves to know. She was crushed. She was angry, upset, couldn’t believe it, she’s been there for so long, for them to just pick up and move, kind of blown away that there’s no loyalty.”
McMeans is also upset because the Cathedral City location has continued to take new members. It’s a situation that could mean a loss for many people.
“Every month it’s taken out of their bank account electronically,” said McMeans. “If that happens in June, and then cancel in June as well. They just paid twice for June.”
