Seniors Gear Up For Prom Night
High school seniors across the Coachella Valley were counting down to prom night on Friday, which for many of them was less than 24 hours away.
Some were still last-minute shopping, while parents gave last-minute advice on being safe on what could be the most memorable night of their lives.
Palm Springs, Cathedral City and Palm Desert High Schools were among those getting ready to host a senior prom this weekend.
Students are anxious for what lies ahead.
“This is my first prom,” said Justine Maglione, a junior at PDHS.
“I hope it’s what I’m thinking,” said Estevan Garcia, a senior at Indio High School.
Toda Moda in Cathedral City has been slammed the last few days with teenage girls swimming through dresses looking for the perfect one, said Daniela Moreno, an employee.
Moreno said the crowd brought back good memories of her senior prom.
“The shopping, getting everything perfect, trying to be more unique, getting the whole outfit for the after parties and the shoes,” said Moreno, “it was just like crazy and fun.”
It’s been equally chaotic at the Men’s Wearhouse in Palm Desert.
The store has been renting tuxedos for more than three years, but this has been the busiest week of 2011 and most profitable tuxedo season ever, said James Walton, store manager.
“(Yesterday) was a zoo,” said Walton. “You had five high schools full of seniors in here all fighting for tuxedos, and we had approxiamtely 431 high school seniors in here the last two days.”
Estevan Garcia is taking his longtime girlfriend to the IHS prom.
He’ll be dancing the night away at Rancho Las Palmas.
Garcia just asks that everyone be safe.
“Get a designated driver, because that’s what kills everybody — drinking and driving, and that’s what I am — the designated driver,” said Garcia.
Grant Devlin took part in the Every 15 Minutes program at PDHS — it’s a campaign against teenage drinking and driving.
He’s taking Justine Maglione to the dance and said he will take every precaution to make sure the night goes smoothly.
“Best to have a destination before you even start the car on is what I always say,” said Devlin.
“I am so excited to get all fancied up,” said Maglione.
PDHS is hosting its prom at the Renaissance Esmeralda in Indian Wells.
PSHS will host its at the Riviera.
