Thunderstorm Wets Palm Springs Overnight
A thunderstorm fueled by monsoonal moisture was violent enough to wake up some Palms Springs residents about 4 a.m. today.
The brief rainstorm came on the heels of widespread thunderstorms, including some flooding, over the mountains and inland areas on Saturday afternoon.
The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway was operating normally at about 11:30 a.m. today after storm-related electrical issues caused the delay of its opening, a tramway spokeswoman said.
National Weather Service forecasters predict a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms across most of Riverside County today, with highs ranging from the upper 80s to about 107 degrees in the Palm Springs area, where forecasters predict a 40 percent chance of measurable precipitation.
A flash flood watch is in effect for the mountain and desert areas through this evening.
A high pressure system over the region is drawing in tropical moisture from the south as it rotates clockwise, National Weather Service forecasters said.
