The Public is Welcome to go Behind the Pink Wall at Sunnylands
The Annenberg Estate, in Rancho Mirage is no longer a mystery. The public is now invited to see what is behind the pink wall, at Sunnylands. News Channel 3 had a chance to see what only 7 presidents, British royalty and entertainment icons have been able to see. But now, everyone is invited inside, to learn about the legacy of Walter and Leonore Annenberg. Center Director, Janice Lyle lead us on the tour. She started out by saying, “In anticipation of Margaret Thatcher’s visit, they built a pink wall that extended beyond those pink gates.” As visitors transcend the pink wall and enter the Annenberg home, they’ll see a magnificent atrium living room, bringing architecture, art and nature together. It’s furnished with Hollywood regency flair, suited for the likes of Frank Sinatra, who was even married by the fireplace. You can admire digital reproductions of all of the original artwork that used to grace the walls. Guests are also invited into the room of memories, that highlights the couple’s message of public service, recorded through pictures. Even Christmas cards, from the Queen Mum, dating back to 1972 have their own home, in the same room that President Reagan once sat. Lyle says, “This was the historic spot where President Reagan sat, watching Gorbachev, speak about reducing tensions between the Soviet Union and the United States.” From now on, the original bedroom will be reserved only for visits from the President. The other 5 bedrooms, are decorated exactly the same way, but in different colors. They’re reserved for political, educational and artistic leaders, who will stay at the estate for retreats, with one goal in mind. Community Relations Director, Mary Perry says that goal is to, “To fulfill our mission, which is to affect change in the world. That is our goal and I’m confident that we will see things happen here at Sunnylands, that will positively change the world. Beginning March 1st, public tours will start, at $35.00 a ticket. The new visitor’s center is free to guests, to enjoy the gardens, and learn more about the history of the unique estate.
