Palm Springs police help ill hikers off trail

Palm Springs police called in mounted police and a helicopter to help bring two ill hikers down from the Lykken Trail on Wednesday.

A police spokesperson said dispatchers got a call around 3:15 p.m. telling them about the hikers. In their 60s and visiting the area, the pair had fallen ill during their hike and didn’t bring enough water. They had stopped about one mile above the Palm Springs Art Museum.

Police hiked up to the men, where they found one of them was unresponsive.

A helicopter will be used to bring the severely ill man down from Mt. San Jacinto, the spokesperson said.

The rescue effort is still going on.
