Volcano fire fully contained

The Volcano Fire, which charred 355 acres west of Murrieta since it broke out Wednesday, was fully contained today.

The fire was declared 100 percent contained at 6 p.m. Sunday, said Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Jody Hagemann.

The fire broke out around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Tenaja Road and Via Volcano in unincorporated Deluz when motorized brush-clearing equipment operated by a Riverside County Transportation worker struck barbed wire, causing sparks, firefighters said.

It destroyed one home and injured three firefighters.

More than 300 firefighters from Riverside County, the U.S. Forest Service, March Air Force Base, Murrieta, Orange County and the Pechanga reservation have been deployed, Hagemann said. Seven water-dropping helicopters and six air tankers attacked the fire from the air.
