Suspect surrenders after standoff with police
A teenage suspect wanted in connection with a shooting Friday in Coachella finally gave up peacefully to police after hiding in a home on Calle Teche for hours.
According to Riverside County Sheriff Department spokesman Deputy Angel Ramos, the incident began just before 11:30am Wednesday. Investigators from the Thermal Sheriff Station were questioning witnesses about a shooting that occurred in the area August 10.
During the interviews one investigator spotted a group of men arguing, with one person pointing a black, semi-automatic handgun at another person.
According to police, two of the three men were identified as the suspects in Friday’s shooting. Officers surrounded the area and were able to arrest 18-year old Martin Rios Reyes of Coachella.
However, the 17-year-old suspect then ran into a home on Calle Teche north of Avenue 53 says Ramos.
Deputies evacuated homes near the house during the standoff. Several hours later, the teenager walked out of the home and was taken into custody. No one was hurt.
The males were taken to the Riverside County Jail in Indio, and the Indio Juvenile Hall and booked on suspicion of attempted murder.
