Steve Garvey to attend showing of “42” Friday in Palm Desert

Former professional baseball player Steve Garveywill answer questions after a screening Friday night of “42,” the new movieabout baseball legend Jackie Robinson.

Garvey, who lives in Palm Desert, will attend the 7 p.m. screening atCinemas Palme d’Or in Palm Desert. At age 8, Garvey was a batboy for theBrooklyn Dodgers during Robinson’s era, according to theater operators.

“42” depicts Robinson’s signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers and breakingbaseball’s color barrier in 1947. The film is directed by Oscar winner BrianHelgeland and stars Harrison Ford as Branch Rickey and Chadwick Boseman asRobinson.

Garvey, who played first base for the Los Angeles Dodgers and San DiegoPadres, was a 10-time All-Star, National League MVP in 1974 and led the 1981Dodgers to a World Series win.
