Fire burns homes, forces evacuations in Jurupa Valley
A wind-whipped fire that broke out today in JurupaValley destroyed multiple structures — including two homes — and blackeneda dozen acres before it was contained.
The non-injury blaze was reported around 8:25 a.m. at Jurupa Road andVan Buren Boulevard.
Flames completely torched two houses and damaged two others, while fivedetached structures, a boat and 10 vehicles were also damaged or destroyed,according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The fire was 100 percent contained by 1:45 p.m., county fire officials said.
A gas station was evacuated and classes were suspended at nearby VanBuren Elementary School, from which children were taken and placed at Mira LomaMiddle School for the day, authorities said.
Sixteen engine crews and a truck company, numbering around 57firefighters, were battling the flames.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known, though reports from thescene indicated a tossed cigarette might be to blame.
