A Salton Sea specialty license plate may become available
You could soon see Salton Sea specialty license plates on vehicles in California.
Friday, the winning design was revealed at the Cal State San Bernardino Palm Desert campus. The winning artist, Palm Springs High senior Courtney Donaldson, talked about what inspired her design.
“I’ve never been there, so I just looked up the pictures of it and read about the place when it was nicer. I saw that it had these birds and I thought they looked cool, so I just wanted to make that the main thing on there,” said Donaldson.
More than 20 local high school students submitted their work in an art contest set up by Assemblyman Brian Nestande. He authored a bill to create a license plate to help raise money for the much-needed restoration of the Salton Sea. The largest lake in the state is receding and experts predict it will only get worse in a few years when farm run-off water will be diverted to coastal areas.
The top five finalists in the license plate art contest were awarded a total of$3,000 in scholarships.
In order for a Salton Sea license plate to be produced, Nestande’s bill has to pass the Senate and be signed by Gov. Jerry Brown. Also, the CHP has to approve the design and at least 7,500 people have to order the plate, at a cost of $50 each year.
