Police arrest Indio man on check fraud charges

An Indio man is behind bars today accused of trying to cash a fraudulent check in Coachella.

Police responded to a call Monday at 4:20 p.m. at the Wells Fargo bank on the 49200 block of Grapefruit blvd.

The bank manager recognized 27-year-old Johnny Artis from a previous attempt to cash a fraudulent check.

When officers arrived, Artis ran off into a residential neighborhood.

Police later found him hiding in a backyard of a home on Romero Street.

Artis was taken in to custody and transported to an area hospital for heat exhaustion.

He was arrested for commercial burglary, passing an altered check, and violation of probation.

Artis wasbooked into the Riverside County Jail in Indio.
