Indio CHP office offers free driving classes for teens and seniors

The California Highway Patrol will offer two free driving classes in Indio Tuesday and Wednesday, one for teenagers and one for older people.

The “Age Well, Drive Smart” class begins at 10 a.m. today at the CHP office at 79-650 Varner Road. The program is designed to give older drivers tips on driving safer and driving longer. Participants can ask questions and get information on local transportation options, according to CHP Officer Mike Radford.

The “Smart Start” teen driver class on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the CHP office will include information designed to help teens become better equipped to handle situations behind the wheel.

The class starts with a “Red Asphalt 5” video — a CHP-produced documentary depicting crashes and their aftermath — and photos from local fatal collisions. The class then transitions to driving basics and tips, according to the CHP. Teens must be accompanied by a parent.

Reservations are required and participants in both classes will receive a certificate upon completion.

To register, call (760) 772-8911.
