Local non-profits feel shortage of holiday food donations
More than 300 families depend on the Galilee Center in Mecca for food and clothes each week. And, the holidays bring in many more.
The center plans to provide 600 food baskets, including a turkey, starting at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
To help provide enough meals, Augustine Casino in Coachella filled the Center’s truck with canned food and donated $1,500.
“It’s a blessing because we are really in need. We provide 300 families every week and that takes a lot of the food,” said Gloria Gomez, founder of the Galilee Center.
Gomez warned that donations to the center are down 50 percent compared to this time last year. It needs canned goods, spices, turkeys, whole chickens and fixings. The FIND food bank said Monday that all around there’s a shortage of donations.
“It’s a wonderful time to help people. It’s an opportunity for the people who have some to provide to the low-income families,” said Gomez.

Jordan Outreach Ministries in Indio will provide a Thanksgiving feast from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, for families to take home (located at 50930 Calhoun St, Indio).
The Coachella Valley Rescue Mission will serve 2,500 hundred thanksgiving meals, including dinner on Wednesday, Nov. 27, from 2 p.m to 6 p.m. and Thursday breakfast from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Dinner will be served from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. (located at 47470 Van Buren St. Indio).
