Off road accident kills pedestrian in Brawley
A man died at JFK Memorial in Indio after he was fatally struck by an off-road vehicle at a recreational area, according to the Riverside County coroner.
Richard Hollien, Jr., 51, of Phelan, died after he was struck by an off-road vehicle at the Imperial Sand Dune Recreational Area in Brawley Saturday, around 3 p.m.
Investigating CHP officer E. Soltero said Cesar Maceda, 35, from Upland was driving a sand rail with his three children, ages 12 to 16, as passengers down Oldsmobile Hill at a speed of 20 to 30 mph.
“When the driver got to the bottom of the hill he lost control of the sand rail. The sand rail continued out of control, striking a parked quad (RV), a Jeep Cherokee and continued eastbound striking a black sand rail. With the force of impact it pushed the sand rail into a blue truck and a pedestrian,” Soltero said.
Phelan was transported by air ambulance to JFK Memorial where he died about an hour later.
