Behind-the-scenes of one of Amazon’s fulfillment centers
Upon arrival to one of Amazon’s 40 U.S. fulfillment centers, you’ll likely feel overwhelmed — everything seems to be everywhere. However, you’ll soon find, that’s exactly were it’s all supposed to be.
“The shelves will look a little bit chaotic and disorganized but the software always knows exactly where things are,” Amazon spokesperson Ty Rogers said.
To better understand the process of how millions of gifts get to millions of people, Rogers walked us through it.
What’s perhaps most intriguing, the placement of items on these shelves as they wait to get ordered.
Take dog treats next to a speaker. First off, this makes it easier to choose the correct item. Also, it’s more efficient to have a little bit of everything at your fingertips instead of having to walk all the way to the pet section, for example.
When someone orders an item, it begins it’s journey on the miles of conveyer belts. After getting boxed it goes through this scanner, and seconds later …. A name and address label gets smacked on.
“It kind of feels like magic when you’re here because it’s such a big facility. There’s so much going on here,”Rogers said.
Then the package comes down the final conveyor belt and into the loading zone, where it then gets delivered straight to your front door!
