Many roads still closed as weekend events go on as planned

The sun finally broke through the clouds as the 15th Annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s kicked off at Palm Desert Civic Park.

“Well, rain or shine we would do this because the families in the valley need us, and they need to raise money for the support programs we give. But this is absolutely gorgeous with the beautiful blue sky,” said Anne Gimbel, regional director of the Alzheimer’s Association.

For many it was a cause close to home.

“My uncle, Jack Schulman, passed away from Alzheimer’s a little while ago and I’m supporting him,” said walker Matthew Schulman.

Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. and participants hope the event brings us one step closer to a cure.

“To educate people and to be more aware what the disease is,” said Donald Beck, who came with his partner to support the cause.

Nearby, the 4th Annual Patrick Warburton Celebrity Golf Tournament also went as planned. A few looming clouds didn’t stop the famous faces from enjoying a day on the course.

But as for road closures at the wash, Saturday morning Gene Autry Trail still looked like a muddy river. That street, along with Araby Drive and Cathedral Canyon, still closed due to flooding.

Frank Sinatra was reopened to traffic in the morning, but with the area as wet as it still is, it would only take a little bit of rain for it to be closed again.

With scattered showers continuing into Saturday night, make sure to check road conditions before heading out.
