Alleged smugglers busted with over 20 lbs. meth

Border Patrol agents arrested two men on Thursday after they found more than 20 lbs. of methamphetamine hidden in a utility trailer.

A Toyota 4Runner was stopped at the Highway 86 checkpoint between Westmorland and Salton City around 11 a.m. A 52 year old man and his 31 year old passenger were in the SUV, which was pulling a utility trailer, according to authorities.

A K9 alerted agents to the vehicle.

During inspection, officers found 24 vacuum-sealed packages of methamphetamine hidden within the flatbed of the utility trailer.

Agents said the meth weighed 20.18 lbs in total, and is estimated at $131,202.

The DEA is assuming the investigation.

One of the suspected smugglers is a U.S. citizen and the other is a U.S. permanent resident cardholder, according to authorities.
