‘Safe and Sane’ fireworks benefit local organizations
You’ll find some wild names for sparklers, including Tiger Fury, Lucky Leprechaun and Hasta La Vista Baby and more, at “Safe and Sane” fireworks stands in the Coachella Valley. For customers, they spark excitement for Independence Day traditions.
“I’m going to light some fireworks,” said Benjamin Mellinger, 10, of Indio.
Before you fire them up into the sky, remember Cathedral City, Desert Hot Springs, Indio and Coachella are the only cities in which they’re allowed.
The legal fireworks range from $1.99 to $499. They’re safer if handled with caution and they benefit local organizations, such as the Indio Police Officers Association and the Indio High School Band.
“It’s important because I still have a sibling there. She’s in band and this is our way of supporting them,” said Maria Rodriguez, 18, an Indio High School graduate. “A lot of kids can’t afford their band fees and this is our way of helping them.”
“It’s fun for everyone and it also gives back. It’s a double positive,” said Joe Mellinger, of Indio.
Be sure to have a safe, sane and legal holiday.
“Keep some water handy, stand back a safe distance and don’t do anything crazy,” Joe Mellinger said.
Remember in all other desert cities and unincorporated areas of Riverside County fireworks are illegal. If you’re caught you could face a hefty fine.
