All lanes back open in both directions after bridge collapse on 215 fwy

Interstate 215 near Perris was open in both directions today following a bridge collapse caused by a big rig crash.

The California Highway Patrol online incident log reported that the northbound lanes of the highway at Nuevo Road, closed since the 10 a.m. Tuesday accident, were re-opened at 5:15 a.m. today.

The interstate’s southbound lanes, which were only intermittently open Tuesday, were re-opened at 3:05 a.m., the log reported.

The crash occurred around 10:05 a.m. Tuesday when a northbound big rig towing two trailers laden with sand overturned and struck the bridge. The impact of the crash caused part of the bridge to collapse into the northbound lanes, the CHP reported.

The driver of the big rig, a 66 year-old man from Victorville, was not injured, and no other injuries were reported, said Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Jennifer Fuhrman.
